Making Our Website Accessible: Introducing Text-to-Speech Feature

At Glencraft, accessibility has always been more than just a consideration—it’s part of our DNA. When we first opened our doors in 1843, our sole purpose was to provide employment opportunities for people who were visually impaired. That founding mission of inclusivity and opportunity has shaped our values for over the last 180 years.

Why Accessibility Matters

The internet is an essential part of daily life. Whether searching for information, shopping for products, or connecting with communities, people rely on websites for countless reasons. However, for those with visual impairments, navigating digital spaces can be challenging—especially when websites lack accessibility features.

Just over 2 billion people worldwide live with some form of visual impairment. For these individuals, standard website layouts, small fonts, or low-contrast text can make it difficult to engage with online content. Accessibility features, like text-to-speech, help bridge this gap by allowing websites to be heard, not just seen.

What is Text-to-Speech?

Text-to-speech (TTS) technology converts written text into spoken words. When visiting our website, users can now listen to all our text-based content with just a click of a button. This feature is particularly beneficial for individuals who are blind or visually impaired and rely on auditory tools for reading. It also helps those with dyslexia or other learning disabilities, individuals who experience eye strain from prolonged screen use, and people who simply prefer to listen rather than read.

By integrating TTS, we’re making it easier for more people to access our products, services, and story—ensuring no one is excluded from learning about the craftsmanship and heritage behind every Glencraft mattress.

Our Heritage

By introducing text-to-speech on our website, we’re honouring our heritage and ensuring that individuals with visual impairments can fully engage with us today. Just as we once provided meaningful work for those who faced barriers, we now strive to create an inclusive online experience where everyone has equal access to our products and story.

We believe that accessibility is a responsibility all businesses should embrace, and we encourage others to take steps toward a more inclusive digital world. Small changes can make a big difference—and together, we can ensure no one is left behind.
